Last night, just before 9 pm, I felt the roof of my house shake for some moments. It wasn't just the possums making whoopee. I later discovered a 5.4 magnitude earthquake had spread from about 130 km south-east of Melbourne. Although there was some minor damage, it was no catastrophe. My friend Hussein found this response from an unknown source, with thanks:
Hello Faisal:
ReplyDeleteGosh, the Earth moving....how alarming. But, we are relieved to read that all is well with you and everyone in the area.
The things which go bump in the night.....!!!
Yes, Jane and Lance, far more important no lawns were dismembered. Not much really altered. Not exactly international news. Quite strange, to feel things shuddering and then return to stillness.
ReplyDeleteI have experienced earthquakes in Greece that were really sceary.
ReplyDeleteStill there is always some kind of a philosophical awe about them.
Even on those Melbourne ones ; )
ye, Demie, there is something awesome about a huge force coming at you out of the blue - not that I want to be awed too much!
DeleteGosh - possums normally make that much disturbance? D
ReplyDeleteYes, Dave! You wouldn't believe the clatter and the thumping, and in the twice-a-year breeding seasons, the shrieking, like some poor soul's being strangled in the tree-tops. It's enough to make you sit bolt upright.
DeleteSo glad to hear all remains intact including you sense of humor. I am currently in San Francisco where many are quite familiar with earthquakes. Take care and please tell the possums to try and control themselves. Bonnie
ReplyDeleteYes, Bonnie, San Francisco knows as much as anywhere about earthquakes. I'm glad my own experience wasn't quite so jolting.
DeleteYou can't tell a possum anything, but I'm in a minority that's very fond of them, so that's cool.
funny that you say this - Ron did wonder at first if it was possums. But then he does come from England ... so what can you expect???
ReplyDeleteI guess Squirrel Nutkin steps a little more softly...
