That book is very lovely, but be careful of idealizing the 1950s - I remember small mindedness, intolerance of difference, authoritarianism, stifling conformity - of course, that gave the impetus to the rebellious sixties.Sue Catminthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14242341696447975933noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6079722435186265697.post-25092878535424037812011-12-17T13:32:26.037-08:002011-12-17T13:32:26.037-08:00It's a garden I have heard praised before, but...It's a garden I have heard praised before, but I have yet to visit it.
Perhaps it should finally go on my list.Frikohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04277167831642088694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6079722435186265697.post-80296025625731729002011-12-16T13:16:16.234-08:002011-12-16T13:16:16.234-08:00Way too complimentary, Dave!

Perhaps on my next trip. My friends own this place and it is very special: http://www.thealbannach.co.uk/. I try and get up there as much as possible but it is an awful long way from Sussex. If we fly to Inverness it is still a two hour drive to Lochinver. But I guess distances like that are but nothing in Australian terms. She does, as you say, write in an unhurried manner where each word remains on the page to be savoured over and over. 'Design Your Own Garden' is another of her books which you may well enjoy.

Sadly we have never got as far as Inverewe but do believe it to be wonderful. Now that is something which we could do together - such fun it would be!

As an aside, we have a number of books with illustrations by William McLaren whose work we think is particularly appealing.Jane and Lance Hattatthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16831890261259302647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6079722435186265697.post-28056514163524579032011-12-16T02:52:21.790-08:002011-12-16T02:52:21.790-08:00You bring enthralled memories back.
